For a healthy planet thanks to sustainable food and ecological development

About us

Biovision – Foundation for Ecological Development A world with enough healthy food for everyone, produced by healthy people in a healthy environment: this has been our commitment at Biovision for nearly 25 years in Africa, in Switzerland and internationally. About our work Through concrete applications in agriculture, science and politics, we prove that people can be fed well and healthily without endangering natural resources. We show how the food system – from production to consumption – can be made sustainable. In doing so, we develop, test and disseminate solutions to overcome hunger, poverty, consequences of climate change and biodiversity loss. Approximately 50 employees in Zurich and Geneva, supported by colleagues from 23 partner organizations in sub-Saharan Africa, make up Biovision. Where we work In Switzerland we provide useful tips and information about sustainable consumption, and we are active in the movement for a sustainable food system. In sub-Saharan Africa we disseminate knowledge and practical skills in organic agriculture to farmers, extension workers and authorities. Internationally we build new alliances with governments, organizations and business to achieve better ecological and social framework conditions. How we work Our core competence lies in imparting knowledge about organic agriculture and responsible consumption, plus in strengthening the capacity for action. We build networks and form strong alliances to realize our vision. We inspire and motivate people to reconsider their ways and act sustainably. Our approaches are based on science and tested practically. We maintain close cooperation with competent, locally entrenched partner organizations. We lead by example and act diligently and transparently.

"Through #agroecology, we can link 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 and ensure we achieve the KMGBF targets by working hand-in-hand with local communities.” This inspiring message emerged from our peer-to-peer exchange “Boosting National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) through Agroecology” held on 9-10 May. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼? 🍃 A field visit to agroecological farms in Kiambu county (Kenya) at the Community Sustainable Agriculture Healthy Environmental Program (CSHEP). Participants experienced firsthand how agroecology contributes to biodiversity through practices that conserve water, enhance soil health, and support community income and solidarity. 🗨 An insightful exchange with Professor Kiringai Kamau (Minister of Devolution and External Linkages, Murang’a County) on the Murang’a Agroecology Act and Policy on how policy facilitates scaling agroecology to support biodiversity at a larger scale, and by creating strong linkages between agroecological producers and consumers, while supporting value-chains. 💡3 workshop-sessions to understand (1) where countries stand with the integration of a food systems approach through agroecology, (2) how and where to integrate agroecology in the NBSAPs developing blueprints following this approach and (3) concrete next steps for country focal points.    ️️𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗺? 25 NBSAP focal points, food system and agroecology focal points and CSO representatives from Colombia, Cambodia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. 📑 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀: ◾To integrate a food systems approach through agroecology in the NBSAPs, it should be included along the entire NBSAP structure (e.g. problem statement, national objectives, interventions and implementation) ◾Food system actors need to engage with- and should be consulted in formal NBSAP processes. ◾Once agroecology is mainstreamed in existing policy frameworks such as national development plans and other international commitments (e.g. NDCs on climate change adaptation and mitigation), NBSAPs should take these into consideration to ensure policy coherence.    📣Do you want to pursue the discussion? Join us at the #SBSTTA26: “Agriculture and Food Systems in NBSAPs: critical pathways to GBF Implementation and beyond” in #Nairobi on 14 May at 18:15 to discuss further the integration of a #foodsystems approach through #agroecology into NBSAPs to combat biodiversity loss. For more information:🔗https://lnkd.in/dwRy7wXM 📄 This initiative by Biovision, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, WWF, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and the Agroecology Coalition supports the integration of agroecology in updating and developing NBSAPs under the new KMGBF. A handbook summarizing these engagements will be published in fall 2024. For more details: 🔗https://lnkd.in/e5G6uG23

Joseph Nkandu, a #participant in the Neycha Accelerator project, exemplifies the transformative power of agroecology, showing how sustainable practices can uplift coffee farmers without harming the environment. Queen of Coffee's #success story highlights the potential of #agroecology to improve livelihoods and promote care for the environment. By focusing on empowering smallholder farmers, Nkandu ensures that coffee production is both sustainable and profitable, contributing to a dignified life for farming families. ☕ This initiative not only supports #local communities but also serves as a model for sustainable agriculture globally, reinforcing the importance of equitable practices in the food system. For those interested in the intersection of agroecology and food system transformation, Joseph Nkandu's work with Queen of Coffee is a demonstration of the power of community, innovation, and sustainability working hand in hand. #SustainableDevelopment #FoodSystemTransformation #AgroecologyWorks #neychaaccelerateor

📻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 The transformation of Florian Gitu Kwaslema's farm from conventional to agroecological practices is a story of success. 📻 The key to this success? A pioneering radio programme reaching millions across Tanzania, disseminating valuable insights into #agroecology. This programme combines the power of traditional wisdom with modern communication practices, bridging the gap between past and present agricultural practices. 🤝 Interactivity at its core: The unique component of this project allows farmers to shape the conversation, providing feedback, posing questions, and suggesting topics directly to the radio stations. This dynamic exchange has not only professionalised the radio programmes but has significantly influenced the content, ensuring it meets the listeners' needs. The system of exchange, continually refined over the years, utilizes the innovative Uliza feedback system, enabling real-time engagement and co-creation of content by the farming community. 🌾 From the ground up: Kwaslema's story shows that embracing agroecological methods can lead to increased independence and economic improvement. Rejecting expensive, synthetic inputs for self-sourced, natural alternatives, he's seen a remarkable uptick in his farm's productivity and sustainability. 🌱 We, together with Farm Radio International - Radios Rurales Internationales, plan to extend the reach of our radio broadcasts. The goal is to double the listener base, educating and encouraging more people to adopt agroecological practices by 2027. Stay tuned for more stories of change and resilience, as we continue to support the spread of agroecology and sustainable food systems. Together, we can make a difference. For more details, please find the story here (in German): https://lnkd.in/ds5CjRdN Thanks to Lothar J. Lechner Bazzanella for covering this topic, and Martin Schmid as project manager. #AgroecologyWorks #SustainableAgriculture #Tanzania #FoodSystemTransformation #EcologicalFarming #Community #Biovision #FarmRadioInternational

🌱 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬 🌱 Today marks an important moment in our journey supporting the transition towards #SustainableFoodSystems through #agroecology as we announce the launch of our latest outcome brief: "𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" with the support of the Policy Working Group of the Agroecology Coalition. National Agroecology Strategies (NASs) are comprehensive frameworks deeply rooted in agroecological principles, designed to address diverse societal needs. At the heart of NASs lie specific policy interventions aimed at accelerating #FoodSystemTransformation through #agroecology. But how do we bring agroecology to scale at the national level to catalyze this transformation? This was the central question at our launch event organized in collaboration with FAO and Agroecology Coalition. During the event, we shared key insights gleaned from work on national strategies for an agroecological transformation of food systems in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia as well as from a peer-to-peer exchange organized with 25 policy makers and organizational leaders across eight countries. 👨💻 👩💻 Our webinar participants were thrilled: Agroecological interventions have the potential to protect #biodiversity and nature, and to strengthen National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (#NBSAPs)    💻 🌱 🗯 This was one of the many interesting learnings from the online dialogue "Boosting NBSAPs through agroecology" organized by Biovision Foundation, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, WWF and the Agroecology Coalition as part of our joint initiative.    It was a great pleasure to explore how to integrate #foodsystems and #agroecology into NBSAPs government representatives from ministries of agriculture and environnment, civil society and relevant stakeholders from Colombia, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.   🎯 Among other contributions, Clémence Moinier (IFAD) highlighted potential financing opportunities for agroecological interventions meeting KMGBF targets.    💡Agroecology, as a food systems approach, offers a comprehensive solution for countries to fulfill their commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF).    🚨 As countries embark in the revision of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) ahead of COP16, they can boost their efforts by incorporating agroecology as an approach to achieving multiple KMGBF Targets    The initiative ultimately aims to support decision-makers in the integration of agroecology in the updating and development of NBSAPs under the new KMGBF by facilitating the exchange of good practices, expertise and resources. 📓 Stay tuned for a practical #handbook to be published in fall 2024.
